About Johnson Yorkshire Terrier Puppies

But lapdog doesn't necessarily mean all Yorkies like to sleep on laps all day.

Some Yorkshire Terriers are indeed dedicated cuddle-bugs. But others act more like tiny terriers, with instincts to chase anything that moves and warn off strangers with a sharp shrill bark.

As a trainer and behavioral consultant, the biggest problems I see with Yorkies have to do with how their owners treat them. If you carry your Yorkie everywhere, you're telling him that you think the world is too terrifying for him to walk around in.

As a young dog, it is imperative that you get the dog used to regular grooming. A full brush out 2 to 3 times a week is best with baths every 1 to 2 weeks. Never brush a dry coat, always lightly mist with a hydrating spray. If the Yorkshire Terrier is kept in a shorter trim, weekly brush outs are still preferred.

Yorkies tend to be very protective of their territory and owners. This makes them great watchdogs as they bark a lot, but not an effective protection dog due to their small size. If the barking becomes a problem, it can be redirected and resolved with proper training.

A female Yorkie should not be used for breeding until she is 2 years old. A male Yorkie will generally have viable sperm when he is over a year old. Assess whether your dog has the right physical traits for breeding.

This means they eat, sleep, travel, and live in close quarters at all times. It is instinctive for them to feel safe when in close proximity to their pack. Once you bring a dog into your home, you become part of their pack. They enjoy sleeping with you because it makes them feel safe and comfortable.

The Yorkshire terrier's small size belies its true personality, which is energetic, feisty — and domineering. Yorkies are affectionate, but they also want lots of attention the breed is a good choice for someone who wants to dote on a dog. Yorkshire terriers make excellent watchdogs.

Don't let their tiny stature mislead you into thinking that these are nervous, timid creatures. Yorkies were bred to be bold and fearless. In fact, it's quite common to see a tiny Yorkie confidently asserting itself as top dog with a dog several times its size.
